Time Flies When You're Having Fun!

Well a ton of stuff has been going on since my last post. We headed to California for five wonderful days of relaxing. We spent our first day wine tasting and riding in Napa. It was GREAT. We also manged to get in some running and swimming too :)

We landed at Newark at 11:45pm on Tuesday night and it was still 90 degrees outside. We returned to NYC at the tail end of a massive heat wave. We missed the 102 degree day. Lucky us! At least our neighboorhood doesn't smell like poo anymore.

We spent the rest of the week catching up on work and manged to get in few training sessions too. On Friday night I headed to the Astoria Pool for my first swim of the season in the outdoor 50 meter pool. It wasn't too crowded and I swam about 1000 meters as a warm up for my big swim this weekend.

We were signed up for an open water swim in Eastern PA on Sunday. We originally planned to drive down Sunday morning but the weather for NYC was looking craptastic for Saturday so we decided to head down Saturday instead to get in a long bike ride. I wrote fellow blogger Leah (Because I Tri) to ask for some ride suggestions and she kindly offered to meet us and show us the sights!

We met up with Leah around 2pm on Saturday afternoon. It had been raining earlier in the day but we lucked out and the rain had finally stopped. Sam, Leah and I headed out for a 30-40 mile ride through the gorgeous winding roads of PA. Leah and I were chatting and warming up so Sam decided to pull out in front and pick up the pace a bit. Unfortunately, after just a few miles we came across him on the side of the road. He was coming around a corner/downhill and the bike started to slide out underneath him. He attempted to correct, but nothing was working so he hit the ditch instead. Unfortunately it ended in a pile of rocks and he went ass over tea kettle. He was banged up pretty good but luckily he is okay.** No concussion and no broken or fractured bones. I wish I could say the same for his bike.

Leah saved the day and high tailed it back to the car while I waited with Sam. She picked us up and took us to our car so we could get his insurance cards and head to urgent care while her husband went to the crash site and picked up our bikes. On our way to urgent care Sam called his bike shop to figure out how quickly they could fix the bike (the bike shop guy thought he was CRAZY). After a few x-rays and a tetanus shot we were back on road. A delicious pub dinner, lots of ice cream and a big comfy bed are the best cures for bruised body and bruised ego. The vicoden probably helped a little too :)

On Sunday morning Sam stayed in bed and I headed over to the race site for the Steelman Open Water Swim. The event included a 1.5 mile swim and a 3 mile swim. I was signed up for the 3 mile swim. The swim went pretty well, although I must say that 3 miles is a long swim! I am hoping this will make my 2 mile swim next month feel like a piece of cake!

Me & Leah after the swim

It soo much fun to meet a fellow blogger. I'm hoping Leah and I can ride together again sometime soon!
So, that's a quick summary of the last 11 days. I promise more details about everything soon!

** Sam's mom has not been filled in about the accident yet because he hasn't been able to reach her so anybody who might be reading this (er, Eliza) please don't say anything. Thanks :)

Yikes! Poor Sam. I'm glad he is ok. Please don't tell me he was riding his new bike....? Hopefully he can get it sorted out.

Way to go with the 3 miles swim! You are a rockstar. I imagine it must have felt really long. The two miler you are doing, is it Governor's Island?

Wish Sam a speedy recovery!

It was so much fun meeting you and I do hope you and Sam will come out to these parts again for a "do-over." Congrats on the swim. I agree with Regina, you are a rockstar. :)

Yikes! Glad to hear that Sam is ok. I do have to admit that I chuckled at the "ass over tea kettle" phrase, but only after reading that he was OK.

Congrats on the swim! There was supposed to be a 2 mile swim here today, but they canceled it at the last minute. No idea why. I was looking forward to doing a long swim.

Oh, no! Poor Sam. So glad to hear that he is OK. And I am glad to hear the swim went well. Hopefully I can do it next year.

Im finally catching up on everyone's blogs. Tell Sam that I am sorry to hear he went down! Major bummer! Glad you were able to do the 3 mile swim and you had a good weekend.

For those that are concerned I am muddling through just fine. The ony thing that seems to be broken beside my pride are my Mavic Wheels. Hopefully because of my cocktail of pain killers and muscle relaxers I will be up and "running" in no time. -Sam

Yikes on the accident. But happy to hear that you had a good time on the trip and that Sam is alright.

Speaking of blogger meet up...perhaps an Astoria bloggers meet up?
