It's that time of year again. It's time to investigate races and set goals for the coming season. Many of my fellow bloggers will be attempting their first Ironman (I can tell you for sure that I will not be doing the iron distance this year).
Before we can look forward we need to look back a bit. In 2010 I competed in 9 events between May and September. Six triathlons (3 Sprint & 3 Olympic), two open water swims (a 2 miler and a 3 miler) and a swim/run relay. That averages out to one event every other weekend! I also had two fall running races on my schedule (a half and a full marathon) but I had to scratch those due to my foot pain. Plus, I worked as part of the race management team for six events for NY Triathlon and volunteered at the NYC Marathon. I can tell you without a doubt that this was too many races. I was so fired up from my first tri season that I over committed myself. Now that I'm looking back at it all I'm wondering how I had time to actual train?!
I'm going to take a much more relaxed approach to planning the season this year. Right now my schedule looks something like this:
April 3, 2011: NYRR More Magazine / Fitness Magazine Women's Half-Marathon
June 5, 2011: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon (I qualified in the Westchester Tri last September)
Late Summer: My first half ironman - which one?
Fall: Marathon
On average, how many races/triathlons do you do each season? How far in advance do you plan your schedule?

Oh, I'm so glad someone else has a more relaxed schedule this year, too! Good luck with the half-ironman hunt. Keep us posted on what you decide!
I usually only do one major race a year (the last three it's been a marathon.) This year, I'm hoping for 2 half marathons (one of which is the MORE half!) and one full (Chicago in October.) It's the most I've ever done, so we'll see if I make it through everything!
Timberman 70.3! Great first timers Half. After that, training in the AM or evening gets too dark, especially training for that distance.
Great that you are doing Alcatraz!
I'm still trying to figure out my schedule! Ugh! I usually end up doing about 5 tris a year, one 1/2mary, and a handful of last minute 5ks. It sounds like a lot, but spread out throughout the year, it's not that bad!
Good luck figuring out your races!
Carpool with Jon and come to Rev3 Cedar Point for a big ole party
Set it waay in advance, then add races willy nilly throughout the year :) It's meant I ended up with quite a lot of racing this season (so far I'm at 2 half IMs, a half marathon, 2 Olympic distances, a 10k, a 2.5k ocean swim, and a bunch of mini tris and 5ks, and I still have a Half IM and two Olympic distances to go)
So exciting to do a race you had to qualify for... Awesome!
I posted my schedule last month I think. I am only doing two tris this year and the NYC marathon. However, I am doing a race per month leading up to all that.
As for the end of summer tri, Timberman sounds good although I haven't done it. Also, more locally is the Westchester Toughman. The run course goes across the Croton Reservoir which is gorgeous. I did a lot of trail running up there and it is really pretty. The date is Sept. 11.
THat Alcataz Tri looks aweosme..
I was asked to Pick "stylish Blogs" I took that as "interesting blogs"
I selected your blog
You can go to www.apolicemanslife.com to read about it, kinda fun

This is my first year in triathlon so I'm definitely planning on not going crazy. One mini tri in May, one sprint in June and probably one more sprint later in the summer. So excited!
