What Scares You?

I was recently having a conversation with several coworkers and one mentioned that she did not know how to swim. I was surprised and asked her what she meant. She said she didn't want to swim as a child so her parents did not make her (much to her adult disappointment) and she is afraid of water. If she was thrown overboard she might be able to keep herself afloat for short time, but she wouldn't last long. Much to my surprise the three other women in conversation also said they did not know how to swim! I think my parents taught me to swim before I learned to talk and after spending 6 years on a swim team I'm practically half fish. It made me sad to learn that they did not know how to swim at all.

The conversation drifted away from swimming and someone mentioned horseback riding and dancing (like at a club).

I have no desire to go horseback riding because I think horses are big, powerful and scary. However, if I was with someone who wanted to go horseback riding I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to trying. On the other hand, the idea of "fast" dancing like at a club or a wedding terrifies me. Just thinking about having to dance in a social setting makes my stomach knot up and my throat constrict a little. When we got married we had a daytime wedding. There were many reasons for this but I would be lying if I didn't say that I was drawn to a small, daytime wedding because it eliminated any chance of someone trying to make me dance.

When I think about it these two things are somewhat surprising. My #1 hobby is a sport where riding a bike (fast) is very important and I think riding a bike is more dangerous than horseback riding. I don't know what to say about dancing since I don't even want to think about it...

As Gretchen Rubin from The Happiness Project said, "You can choose what you do; you can't choose what you LIKE to do."

What is something that scares you that others might be surprised to learn?

I feel obligated to respond because I have been a cyclist for 4 or so years and an equestrian for 16. And while riding a bike is dangerous, mostly due to traffic, I consider horseback riding to be just as dangerous considering you are riding on top of a 1000+ animal that has a brain. Luckily I have never had a really serious bike crash OR a serious fall off of a horse!

Add me to the fear of water list! I only learned how to swim 5 months ago but day by day am getting a little less freaked out seeing the floor of the pool drop as I make my way to the end of the lane..

I Googled "scott jurek and planks" and your blog came up. So glad I came across it. Love it, and am subscribing :)
